White Oak Characteristics

White Oak is white to light brown. The heartwood is light to dark brown. White Oak is mostly straight grained with medium coarse texture.


Physical Properties

White Oak is hard and heavy. White Oak has medium bending strength. It is low in stiffness and medium crushing strength. It is very good for steam bending. North American Southern White Oak has a more rapid growth than Northern red oak. In addition, North American White Oak tends to be heavier and harder.


Main uses

Kitchen cabinets, flooring, interior design, paneling, furniture, flooring, exterior joinery, moldings, railway sleepers, timber bridges, barrel staves, caskets, and doors. White Oak machines, nails and screws well. White Oak produces good finish when it is stained and polished. It reacts with iron---thus galvanized nails are recommended. It dries slowly with a tendency to split plus it has high shrinkage and can be susceptible to movement in performance.
